What does it exactly mean when banks dont charge a fee to withdraw cash at an atm?

I am interested in washington mutuals new bank account program with "free atm cash withdrawls" where they dont charge a fee to withdraw cash at any atm. But what other fees will I have to pay? Say I take money out of a National City ATM. I know I pay an ATM fee but do I also pay a National City fee. How much are the fees generally?

What does it exactly mean when banks dont charge a fee to withdraw cash at an atm?
You are correct - your bank will not charge you, but whomever is the operator of the ATM you are using will!!

Fees can run $1.50 to $3depending on where you use the ATM; though some can be up to $10 (ie - a casino) - carefully read the disclosure on the ATM before you agree to continue with the cash withdrawal!!
Reply:"Free" ATM withdrawls typically means that your bank will not charge a fee in addition to the ATM operator's convenience fee. Convenience fees will typically range from $1-$2. These days, it's fairly standard practice for banks to not charge their customers additional fees for using a 3rd party ATM.

Some banks and brokerage firms will also offer fee reimbursement (truly free) ATM transactions up to a specified annual amount or number of transactions, but it is less common in the bank world.
Reply:It really depends on whose ATM you use. I have seen them as much as $3.00 and as little as $1.50. The checking I have at my bank is completely free, and I pay no service charge whatsoever. But I also have to keep a certain minimum balance in my checking account. There will always be a catch. If I should ever go lower than the required amount, they charge me a service charge. It is $7.00 for that month, but I always watch my balance. It has been 4 years since I had to pay a service charge. We always get cash if we need it a the grocery store or Walmart's when we buy something, because there is no charge. My bank also does not charge to use the location where I bank, ATM.
Reply:The other bank would charge you a fee unless it was part of your bank's network. For example, If it was part of your bank's network(other banks that have different names, but work together like "sister banks"), there would be no fee at all, if it wasn't, you would pay that bank's fee, but no fee to your bank. You know the saying "nothing in life is ever truly free"! Seems like there's always strings attached! The bank you are considering might even have (in the "fine print" somewhere of course!!) a monthly surcharge, or a mandatory minimum balance that you must maintain at all times.
Reply:you would hve to pay that institutions fee wich ranges from 1.00 to 2.00. -

double check and make sure they dont charge a fee for useing another merchants atm - sometimes they say that and all it really means is they dont charge you for useing their atms but another institutions you would have to pay
