A friend in Canada needs to send me some money. If she purchases an international money order, will I have to pay a fee to cash it? I live on California.

If you deposit it into your bank account the only cost will be the difference in the buy and sell exchange rate. It will be deposited in American dollars depending on the bank rate which will include any exchange cost.
