What's the cost basis for spin-off and one company was bought for cash?

I owned a stock last year. The company did a tax-free spin-off. Let's say, before the spin-off, the stock was 40 and the cost was 28. After the spin-off, one was 30 and the another one was 10 on the first day of openning trade. After some time in the same year. one company was bought for cash. So, now what's my tax basis for the one been bought? let's say, the 30 one been bought for cash. My tax base would be 21 or 28?

At the time of the spinoff, you were provided with your new cost basis. (Check the website.) You must allocate your cost basis across all of stock received.

In your example, apparently $21.
Reply:Oh this question changed cost basis from the last time that I answered it. Now the actual cost was $28 but the value was $40. oh and the cost changed on the spin offs. Oh well.
