Is it possible to cash a US check outside the USA?

I would like to know if it is possible to cash a US check if I am outside the USA? Does any one know?

Thanks in advance!

If you go to the American Express office in a foreign capital, and you have an American Express card account, they might cash a personal check.
Reply:you could use a traveller's check
Reply:The bank where you have your account will probably take it for collect, of course that takes 15 days and will deposit not dollars but the equivalent in the currency of that country. Another choice is to go to a money exchange and try to get them to buy the check. Sometimes they will and sometimes not. In either case make sure it gets cashed before three months from the date it was issued because then you start getting refusals.

Of course it all depends on where you are.

Sometimes you can even call the bank in USA and ask them for advice.

Reply:I had the same problem, a few years back. I lived in Japan, and a relative sent me a check for Christmas, (smart, right?). Anyhow, I'm thinking that maybe you could go to a bank with an American presence (citibank, american express) and they would probably cash it for a hefty fee.

But, what I ended up doing was just endorsing the checks (for deposit only) and I mailed them back to my bank account in the US. You don't say what foreign country you are in. Japan was pretty trustworthy, so i didn't feel to weird about mailing the check back.

Hope this helps you
