What do you need to show in order to cash a cheque in England if you don't have a bank account?

I am hoping someone who works in a UK bank can answer this question. Examples from other countries won't be helpful.

If I write a cheque (in pounds sterling) to someone who doesn't have a UK bank account can she take it into a branch of my UK bank (while she is in England) and cash it?

What will she need to show?

I work for a major uk bank %26amp; know she will not be able to cash a cheque at your bank as cheques can only be cashed in person by the drawer (you) or presented through a bank account.
Reply:carolyn is right, she can't cash it. you would be able to cash it as it is your account, she would only be ale to pay it in a bank account held in her name. No amount of id will enable her to cash it.
Reply:THE ONE AND ONLY WAY would be for her to open a bank account in her name a passport driving licence and utilty bill will be require to open a bank account.

if you make arrangments with your bank such as inform them beforehand that you are making a cheque out to cash, and tell them the name of the person who is going draw on your account it MAY BE possible, note I did say maybe.

why dont you obtain travellers cheques made out in the name of your friend and give her the cheques then she would only require a passport to change them into GBP YOUR FRIEND WOULD HAVE TO ACCOMPANY YOU WHEN YOU PURCHASED THE TRAVELLERS CHEQUES THOUGH
Reply:I am sure Carolyn and Gill are right. It was once possible to write a cheque for cash, but this was stopped years ago. It now needs to go through a bank. If you have to give her a cheque, maybe it could be in the name of someone who has an account and could give her the cash.
Reply:Each and every bank has very different rules,

Some may allow her to cash it and some may not.

Thank you :)

Always take a Birth Certificate, Utility Bill etc etc with you.
Reply:Take some form of photographic ID - passport, driving licence, ID Card- and something to prove residency such as a utility bill, bank statement, TV licence bill, etc.
Reply:Most pre-printed UK cheques are "crossed" (two lines down the middle) and have the words "A/C Payee" on them, which means that even if it is made out to "cash", it still has to be paid into a bank account. She won't be able to cash it over the counter.

I suggest you use a Postal Order instead but keep it 'uncrossed', so they can cash it over the counter.
Reply:You make the cheque payable to ''Cash'' and she would have to take Evidence of Identity in the form of a Passport or Photographic Full Driving Licence. Some evidence of domicile would be required too. She might have to pay a fee for the service.
Reply:no, you can not cash it
Reply:passport, driving licence, birth certificate, utility bill- that about covers it.
