How much cash can you withdraw from a bank at one time?

Let's say you have $500,000 in a savings account at a full service bank. Could you walk in, without prior notice, and withdraw the entire amount in cash?

I'm trying to settle a friendly bet with a co-worker who claims his father did so because the teller was rude.

I know such a transaction would be reported to Dept. of Treasury,

but would they allow such a transaction?

How much cash can you withdraw from a bank at one time?
They have specific amts they can w/d at a time. They dont keep as much in the bank as you'd think- since most transactions now days are just done thru computer. It sounds like the friends dad is one who thinks just because they have a lot they can do whatever they want. not all tellers are rude so why would he take out that much just because of one person? anyway- it depends on the bank and the amount. .. you definately cant take that much out of an ATM
Reply:There is a limit to withdrawals through the drive through in the event that you're actually being forced to withdraw by a third party. As fars as actually entering a bank and taking $500,000 cash, you'd be strongly advised against it, however, if he was insistant and probably a little unhappy as you say this man was, in the interest of avoiding any civil actions there is a possibility he'd be given his cash, however a transfer or cashier's check are more conventional and would probably be suggested methods for withdrawing such a large amount. But if it's his it's his with proper id they would have to give it to him assuming 500,000 cash is readily available
Reply:This depends upon exactly what kind of account a person holds at the bank. For most regular checking accounts, you can withdraw any and all of your money at any time. On some savings plans, you are limited to a certain degree. Each bank has its own rules. Just read the fine print or ask an officer at the bank to explain the details of the account.
